Welcome to IEI’s Supported Employment Training Series, a collection of asynchronous learning modules designed to help mental health and behavioral health providers strengthen their knowledge and skills in psychiatric rehabilitation and supported employment.
Available online and accessible anytime, anywhere, these self-paced trainings offer flexibility for busy professionals while providing practical, evidence-based information that supports employment as a key component of recovery. The modules cover essential topics, including Benefits of Work, The Principles of Supported Employment, Selecting an Occupation, Developing Relationships with Employers, and Accommodations & Disclosure. Together, these trainings provide the foundational knowledge and skills needed to effectively support individuals with mental health conditions in pursuing and maintaining competitive employment.

Title: The Principles of Supported Employment
Welcome to module two of our Supported Employment series! In our first module we emphasized the rich and rewarding benefits that employment offers people, including people with mental health conditions. In this second module, we will be focusing on the evidenced-based approach to supported employment services called Individual Placement and Support (IPS). Throughout this module, you will learn about the principles of IPS so that you have the contextual knowledge and framework needed to understand the provision of vocational services and more importantly how to integrate a vocational focus into your existing services or program modalities.

This module addresses the Supported Employment principle of job development. Job development is a set of skills used to develop and build relationships with the business community. Job development is a critical component to effective employment services. Services that incorporate job development have more successful employment outcomes. This module describes effective tools and strategies to use when job developing in the community.

In this module, we will explore disclosure Dilemmas faced by people with non-apparent
or invisible disabilities. We will also discuss legislation outlawing discrimination based on disability and provide resources to support people with mental health conditions in understanding these rights
